Hands-On Experience

Before coming to college, I had an interest in the interior design industry, so at the end of my sophomore year of college I decided it was time to explore that curiosity. That is when Martha O'Hara Interiors came into my life. I began my journey as a studio intern that summer, assisting the inventory manager/home stylist with any tasks needed. I organized the studio, created project binders, assisted with model home preparation and staging, event planning, set up, and take down, as well as various other tasks. I was able to see all sides of the interior design industry and work in many different areas.

Round Two

When I was reaching the end of my junior year, I took some time to reflect on what I wanted to do that coming summer. I had really enjoyed working with Martha O'Hara Interiors the previous summer, but I wanted to expand my role into the marketing side of the business as well. So I became the marketing intern at MOI for the summer. With this opportunity, I was given the opportunity to assist in social media styling, create advertisements, organize events, and work on articles being published. During this internship I was also able to assist in the purchasing department with purchase orders and maintaining vendor relations. Towards the end of the internship I had the opportunity to travel to Philadelphia with three designers for a week to oversee one of our projects there. We worked hard and turned 31 just-built apartment units into welcoming, stylish units.

Takeaways

Throughout these two summers at Martha O'Hara Interiors, I was able to grow in my communication and design skills, as well as strengthen my strong, dedicated work ethic. I worked with an amazing group of ladies and I am so thankful for all of their guidance and laughter for two years.

Gretchen Swartout, Inventory Manager/Home Stylist

Hardworking, Dedicated, Responsible and Personable. I know these sound “cliche” and what everyone says when describing someone’s characteristics when it comes to work. Nowadays these characteristics are failing and falling by the wayside. Heather is the epitome of these and much more. From day one she listened, observed, took direction and asked questions. She was the best assistant and coworker I could’ve ever asked for. She learned to read my subtle ques, facial ques, body language, everything! She was where I needed her when I needed her and I never had to ask. She just always knew. Her eye for design, be it marketing or helping style a room, was always on trend and also brought youth and culture to the mix. I miss not working with her everyday and would hire her in a second. She is the most sincere and hardworking person I know and I’m so thankful God made our paths cross.
