Mumbai, India Study Abroad

During my sophomore year at the University of St. Thomas, I had the opportunity to study abroad for January term in Mumbai, India for a social entrepreneurship course. This experience was like no other experience I have ever had. Being able to live in Mumbai for a month and see daily life as a local was incredible. The culture dynamics I witnessed were unlike any I had ever seen before. The social entrepreneurship course was unique in that we worked with social enterprises in India and assisted them with some sort of problem or question they had. My team worked with the Nana Nani Foundation, which was a social enterprise aimed at assisting the elderly population in India. My team used our entrepreneurial thinking and marketing skills to come up with a marketing plan that Nana Nani could implement in order to increase the community's awareness of the organization and of the elderly. We also were fortunate enough to get to experience one of the Nana Nani Parks that is a dedicated space for the elderly community to go to in order to seek refuge and have a community. In addition to class and meeting with the social enterprise, the group was able to explore India and see many beautiful sights and eat many delicious foods. This experience was my first study abroad trip at St. Thomas and I could not be more thankful for it. I gained a greater awareness and appreciation for so many things and it opened my eyes to try many new experiences, such as additional study abroad opportunities.
